William Gerald Golding


(1911-1993) William Gerald Golding the English novelist was born in St Columb Minor, Cornwall. His most succesful novel was "The Lord of the Flies". He wrote many other novels, including, "The Inheritors", "Rites of Passage" and "Pincher Martin". In 1983 he was awarded the Nobel prize for literature.


Carlo Goldoni


(1707-1793) Carlo Goldoni was an Italian dramatist. He wrote 250 plays, mostly comedies, frequently featuring satirical attacks on the aristocracy and usually set in his native Venice.


Oliver Goldsmith


(1728-1774) Oliver Goldsmith the Irish poet and essayist was born in Pallasmore, County Longford. In 1756 he moved to London. He was one of the leading poets of his day. His two greatest works are considered to be the novel "The Vicar of Wakefield" and the play "She Stoops to Conquer".


Samuel Goldwyn


(1882-1974) Samuel Goldwyn (real name Schmuel Gelbfisz) was a Polish-born American film producer. He was one of the founders of the Hollywood movie business. In 1924 with Louis B. MAYER he formed Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer.


Benny Goodman


(1909-1986) Benny Goodman (Benjamin David Goodman) was an American jazz clarinetist and bandleader. He was known as the 'King of Swing', and was one of the first white jazz bandleaders to hire Black players.


Maxim Gorki


(1868-1936) Maxim Gorki (real name Aleksei Maksimovich Peshkov) the Russian novelist and short-story writer was born Nizhny Novgorod (New Gorky). He wrote "The Mother", "Childhood" and "The Life of Klim Samgin".


Francisco de Goya y Lucientes


(1746-1828) Francisco de Goya y Lucientes was a Spanish painter and printmaker. His realistic style included royalty, bullfights, everyday portraits.


Thomas Graham


(1805-1869) Thomas Graham was a Scottish chemist. He studied the diffusion of gases and discovered that the rate of diffusion is inversely proportional to molecular weight - 'Graham's Law'. Also, he discovered colloids, osmosis, and dialysis.


Ulysses Simpson Grant


(1822-1885) Ulysses Simpson Grant was an American general and statesman. He served as 18th president of the United States from 1869 to 1877.


Robert von Ranke Graves


(1895-1985) Robert von Ranke Graves the English novelist and poet was born in London. His father was the Irish poet Alfred Percival Graves. He wrote the poems "Good-bye to All That", and "The White Goddess" and the novels "I Claudius" and "Claudius the God".
