Peter Abelard


(1079-1142) Peter Abelard was a French philosopher, theologian and monk. He was founder of the university of Paris.


Ansel Easton Adams


(1902-1984) Ansel Easton Adams was an American photographer. He was noted for his detailed, deep-focus studies of the American landscape.


Joseph Addison


(1672-1719) Joseph Addison was an English essayist and poet. With his friend Richard Steele he founded the 'The Spectator' magazine in 1711. His most famous work was the play 'Cato' which he wrote in 1712.

(C. 450-404 B.C.) Alcibiades was an Athenian statesman and general, pupil of Socrates.


Alexander the Great


(356-323 BC) Alexander the Great was a Macedonian king. He was a pupil of Aristoile, and he inherited the kingdom of Macedon from his father Philip II. He conquered Greece in 336, Egypt in 331, and the Persian Empire by 328. He died in Babylon, and was buried in the city he founded, Alexandria.


Sir Kingsley Amis


(1922-1995) Sir Kingsley Amis was an English novelist and poet. His first novel "Lucky Jim" written in 1954, a satire on academic life, is regarded as a comic masterpiece.


Andre Marie Ampere


(1775-1836) Andre Marie Ampere was a French mathematician and physicist. He discovered electrodynamics and laws of electromagnetism. Found the relation between magnetic field and the electric current producing it. He invented the solenoid.


Roald Amundsen


(1872-1928) Roald Amundsen was a Norwegian explorer. He made the first voyage through the North-West Passage, 1903-6. In 1911 he led the first expedition to the South Pole.


Hans Christian Andersen


(1805-75) Hans Christian Andersen was a Danish storyteller and poet. He was the author of many famous fairy tales including, "The Little Mermaid", "The Snow Queen" and "The Ugly Duckling".


Elizabeth Garrett Anderson


(1836-1917) Elizabeth Garrett Anderson was an English physician. In 1865 she was the first woman to qualify as a doctor in Great Britain.
